Connect-Dots Student Shelter is a social-impact-driven housing solution for university and college students in South Africa who are left stranded due to delays or gaps in accommodation funding, particularly from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). Based in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), this pilot model is designed to expand into other student-dense areas nationally.
Overview
The shelter offers temporary accommodation for up to 3 months in the beginning of the year, and 1 month in the middle of the year, during June/July, and more if the needs arises. The student shelter will be coupled with access to meals, Wi-Fi, academic support spaces, and the full range of Connect-Dots’ personal and professional development services. While the need has long existed, a sharp increase in NSFAS housing backlogs, student protests, and rising rental costs has made the intervention both urgent and necessary.
The initiative directly supports students from underprivileged backgrounds and aims to create a stabilising, empowering, and nurturing environment, so students can focus on succeeding academically instead of surviving day-to-day.
Mission
To provide safe, affordable, and temporary accommodation for disadvantaged students in transition, while equipping them with the tools, support, and stability they need to stay enrolled, focused, and hopeful.
Vision
To be South Africa’s most trusted short-term student housing provider, ensuring that no student drops out of university because they have nowhere to stay.
Problem Statement
Despite being accepted into institutions of higher learning, many students arrive in cities like Gqeberha with no confirmed accommodation. Reasons include:
- NSFAS processing delays or incomplete approvals
- Students arriving before residences open
- Students displaced mid-year during recess
- Lack of family or social support in the city
Many end up sleeping in libraries, toilets, lecture halls, or friends’ couches, often going without food or hygiene resources. This affects mental health, academic performance, safety, and long-term outcomes.
Target Market
- NSFAS-funded students at Nelson Mandela University and other Gqeberha-based institutions.
- Self-funded or bursary students from out of town or rural areas.
- Accommodation seekers looking for structured, affordable housing in close proximity to campus.
Our Who,What, Why & Where
Why
Many South African students, especially those from rural or disadvantaged backgrounds, arrive at university without confirmed accommodation due to NSFAS delays, funding errors, or lack of support systems. Some are forced to sleep in libraries, toilets, or on campus floors. This instability leads to mental distress, academic failure, and student dropouts. The Student Shelter was created to fill this urgent gap by providing a safe, temporary place to stay, along with meals and holistic support.
